مدينة بابل، من أهمِّ المواقع الأثريَّة في العالم، وكانت وما زالت محلَّ استقطاب لجميع آثاريِّي العالم؛ لما تحويه من آثار عريقة ومهمَّة، تعكس تاريخ بلاد الرافدَين وحضارته، وقد نقَّبت فيها البعثات الآثاريَّة من مختلف الدول، ومنها البعثات الألمانيَّة، التي كانت في أوائل البعثات التي استكشفت آثار مدينة بابل وتاريخها.
بدأت البعثات الآثاريَّة الألمانيَّة التنقيب في مدينة بابل في سنة 1899م، بعد أن أرسلت الجمعيَّة الشـرقيَّة الألمانيَّة (Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft = DMG) بعثة آثاريَّة ألمانيَّة برئاسة عالم الآثار الألمانيّ روبرت يوهان كولدفي (Robert Johann Koldewey) (1855-1925م) للتنقيب في مدينة بابل، وفريق عمل مكوَّن من مجموعة من علماء الآثار الألمان.
وقد تعدَّدت المواقع الآثاريَّة التي نقَّبت فيها البعثات الألمانيَّة في محافظة بابل، وفي هذه الدراسة سنذكر تنقيب البعثات الآثاريَّة الألمانيَّة عن آثار بلاد الرافدين، ولاسيما في محافظة بابل، وعلماء الآثار الألمان الذين نقَّبوا فيها، ودراساتهم التي نشـروها عن تنقيباتهم في مواقع محافظة بابل.
